Ciel growled in frustration as the pieces of wood he had been trying to force together clunked to the floor yet again. Sebastian turned at the sound with a sigh, and looked down at his agitated boyfriend, who sat on the carpet surrounded by screws, screwdrivers, and pieces of wood. Ciel had been attempting to build the cot all morning, refusing offers of help and rejecting suggestions that he should maybe look at the instructions.

"Sebastian, this is clearly defective - none of the pieces fit together." Ciel huffed, crossing his arms and glaring at the offending unassembled furniture.

Sebastian stifled another sigh, and picked up the instruction booklet, which Ciel had cast aside with reassurances that 'he knew what he was doing' and the throwaway comment 'how hard could it be?'.

Scanning the first page, he searched through the pieces until he located the parts labelled A and B, then the screw shown in the diagram. The pieces slid together easily, and Sebastian secured them with the screw. He looked up, only to find Ciel glaring at him as the younger demon reached out to snatch away the assembled blocks. Muttering darkly, he then accepted the instruction booklet, pretending not to notice Sebastian's smirk.

"Well, now that you've seen sense, maybe we can get somewhere..." The older demon teased lightly, kissing the top of Ciel's head before turning back to the ladder he had been using. Surveying his handiwork, Sebastian nodded to himself. The spare room, previously used for storing the many bits and bobs that had accumulated over their many years of life, was now clean and empty. One wall was half-covered in lemon-yellow paint, which was also splattered liberally onto the sheets that they had put down to protect the white carpet, and a white dresser in the corner was already assembled and covered with sheets to protect it.

The colour of the walls of the nursery had been a topic of great debate as Sebastian had prepared to leave to buy the paint. Ciel was adamant that nothing but navy blue or hunter green would do for the new future head of the Phantomhives - though the line had long since died out, with the exception of Ciel, the earl was determined that their child would hold the title regardless. Sebastian eventually won out with logic, in that they didn't know the sex of the child and should therefore choose a neutral colour. Still, Ciel had been horrified at the gaudy shade his boyfriend had returned with.

Climbing the ladder, balancing easily, Sebastian continued to paint. He had chosen the colour because he wanted their child to grow up with light and beauty, since both he and Ciel had suffered in their childhoods. This way, every morning the little one would open his or her eyes to see warm, happy surroundings. He smiled to himself at the thought.

As the day wore on, the room began to take shape. The couple chatted easily as they worked, once Ciel had recovered from his embarrassment, and by midday when they stopped for a tea break both were glowing with contentment. Ciel leaned back against one unpainted wall, and grinned at the cot he had finally managed to piece together. It was white, with high sides and a draped curtain over a rail that ran above where the baby would sleep. A dial hung from the rail, with spinning stars and suns made from soft cloth dangling downwards. Reaching up, while supporting his back to maintain his balance as he shifted his weight against the baby's, Ciel set the dial spinning and listened peacefully to the tinkling tune it emitted.

"Here we go, earl gray with a hint of lemon" Sebastian entered the room with two mugs, smiling as he passed one to his boyfriend and sat down beside him. For a few moments, they simply sat in silence, watching the dial spin until it slowed to a stop and the music ended. Then Ciel sighed softly, and shuffled closer to the warm body of his lover. Sebastian put an arm around his shoulders and held him close, feeling a gentle flame of emotion heating his insides as he looked down at the person he loved most in the world.

He couldn't suppress a thrill of excitement as he realised that in just two months, the 'person' he loved most in the world, would become the 'people' he loved most. After all the years of darkness and solitude, finally the demon had found someone who loved him for who he was, someone who had brought light and hope and admiration into his dark days from the moment Ciel summoned him. And now, that someone would bring him another little person to love and to be loved by.

Sebastian couldn't wait.
